The View from Viktoria Park (and happy birthday David Bowie)

by jonnywhitlam

Berlin is a flat city. Often this has its benefits, but getting a view of the whole place without squashing yourself against a horde of tourists can be difficult. This is where Viktoria Park comes in. A complete anomaly in Berlin, a hill! You get a great view from up here, especially on New Year’s Eve (I brought beer instead of a camera that night).

I liked the view away from Mitte as well though, looking at all of these cranes over the Schultheiss brewery. It’s a cool place.

Unrelated to this (but geographically very close) is where David Bowie lived in Berlin in the 1970s, it’s not too far a walk away over the border to Schöneberg. Bowie recorded 3 albums here, including the infamous ‘Heroes’ which was competely written and recorded in then West Berlin. He lived here with Iggy Pop. This was their front door.

I’ve been meaning to come here for a while, and with today being the day Bowie turns 65 I thought I’d make the journey. If you want to know more about this then check out the excellent Bowie In Berlin.
