I spend a fair amount of time taking tourists to the small and fairly depressing town of Oranienburg in order to show them around the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Site.
In an ideal world when you’re telling people what happened in the Nazi concentration camps the facts alone would be enough, the starvation, torture, arbitrary punishments and the mass murder. However I do feel that people get a better sense of the place when they’re as uncomfortable as possible. It’s slightly odd that it has to go to such a basic human level to really make a difference, but that’s the way it is.
I snapped this shot on a particularly gloomy day just after the tour waiting for the train home. It reminds of this picture quite a lot.
