Ostkreuz is a fairly major S-Bahn intersection, connecting the line that circles the city with the main S-Bahn line running East-West through the centre.
Owing to the financial and credit crises of 2007/2008 Berlin decided to offset a potential huge rise in unemployment by promoting nationalised construction projects. The renovation at Ostkreuz is fairly major, and as such is set to continue for another few years. Despite this, only a few months ago there was hardly anything to see here, the structure is going up incredibly quickly so hopefully it’s something I’ll be able to get a few more photos of as time goes by.
Despite Berlin’s best efforts I recently read that unemployment is about twice as high here as compared to the national average.
